Responsibilities
Responsible for the City's Comprehensive Plan, land use,
zoning, street and alley vacations, special use permits, review of site plans
for new construction, economic development and historic preservation. The
division staffs the Plan Commission, Redevelopment Authority of the City of
Superior and Historic Preservation Commission, to name a few.
During 1998, this Department was responsible for directing
the consultants who updated the City's Comprehensive Plan. The purpose of the
Comprehensive Plan is to guide the physical development of Superior for the
next 20 years. The Plan includes areas such as housing, land use, public
buildings, industrial and commercial development, environmental protection,
utilities, parks and recreation and historical preservation. In addition to
the Sidewalk Master Plan and the City Hall Location Study, the Planning
Division is also assigned special projects.
These include the Osaugie Trail, the restoration of the
Old Firehouse and Police Museum and of Fairlawn Mansion and Museum. The
Osaugie Trail is a ten-foot wide, blacktop, multi-purpose trail for walking,
biking, Rollerblading and other non-motorized uses. Ultimately, this
handicapped accessible waterfront trail will extend from Connors Point to Wisconsin
Point.
This division is guided by Planning Procedures published
