Can the fire department help with car seat installation?: The Fire Department has certified technicians that can assist you with your child's car seat at our monthly car seat clinics. Please call headquarters at 715-395-1680 or send us an email to find out when our next clinic is scheduled. You can also follow Superior Fire Department's Facebook page, where we post all upcoming clinics. We do not offer drop in car seat /same day checks. We coordinate with Duluth & Cloquet Fire Departments to try to insure that between our departments, there are 3 clinics available each month. Please give us a call if you have additional questions. 1. Where do I need to place my smoke detectors?: Smoke detectors should be located on each floor of your house. In addition, there should be one installed in each bedroom. Smoke detectors should not be installed in locations that are adjacent to bathrooms or cooking facilities since the steam from these locations can cause false readings. Smoke detectors should be installed in the highest portion of a room preferable at the highest point of the ceiling. They should not be installed within 4" of where the ceiling meets the wall. If mounted on the wall surface, they should not be mounted within 4" of the ceiling but not more than 12" from the ceiling. Lastly, smoke detectors should not be mounted near doorways or windows.

3. Where can I dispose of old fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms?: City of Superior residents can utilize WLSSD’s Household Hazardous Waste facility to dispose of old fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Not all alarms are considered hazardous waste however and some can be disposed of in your regular trash. See the DISPOSAL GUIDE for more information.

4. What does the fire department do besides putting out fires?: Fire Inspections, Fire Education, Hazardous Materials Level A Response Team, High Level Rescue, Water Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, First Responders

5. Does the Fire Department fill swimming pools?: The Fire Department does not fill swimming pools.

6. Why does the fire department do fire inspections?: The fire department is responsible for enforcing laws which we call fire codes, for all businesses and apartment buildings in our community. Most codes are dictated by the State and some are by city ordinance. A code is a rule which a business or owner of an apartment building must follow for fire safety. The department has 3 Fire Inspectors who inspect businesses and apartment buildings in Superior to insure that codes are being followed.

8. How many fire stations do we have and where are they located?: Superior Fire Department has 3 stations in the city. Headquarters is located at 3326 Tower Ave and has the following personnel on duty : Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, 1 Battalion Chief, generally 4 firefighters, a mechanic and an administrative assistant. Three to four firefighters staff Stations 2 and 3, which are located at 723 Hammond Avenue and 2531 East 5th Street, respectively.
