Newton & Nelson Creeks Sewer Improvement
In 2017 twelve Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) occurred in the City of Superior, of which six were located in the East End neighborhood. The overflows in the East End neighborhood were a result of a combination of factors: the gravity sewer system being overwhelmed due to inflow and infiltration, nearby creek levels overtopping the sanitary sewer manholes, and insufficient lift station pumping capacity due to the increased flow.
During significant wet weather events, sanitary sewers adjacent to Newton Creek (along 25th Avenue East right of way) and Nelson Creek (along 30th Avenue East right of way) become inundated by stream flow. This inflow increases flow throughout the sewers and overwhelms the system.
The proposed project will significantly reduce infiltration and inflow to the Newton Creek & Nelson Creek trunk sewers by rehabilitating sewers and manholes, and by removing an above grade creek crossing. A new sewer is being installed in the 26th Avenue East Right-of-Way to further reduce flows to the Newton Creek sewer.
The project started in spring 2018 and is funded through the wastewater utility. The City is receiving a grant for 30% of the costs of the project, through the state Clean Water State Revolving Fund. No assessment will be charged to homeowners.
